Open fractures

An explanation by your Orange County Podiatrist

An open fracture results when the skin over the fracture site is open. Also, if the
open skin is away from the fracture, but tracks to the broken bone, it is still
considered an open fracture.

Open fractures are dangerous because of the increased chance of infection.

The first step is to stabilize the injury and allow the soft tissue edema to subside.
